The existing patio and steps were crumbling; the mortar had been compromised by age and harsh winter conditions. Because of the extent of the damage, repair was not an option. In addition to a new patio, the homeowner also wanted a flat lawn adjacent so that children could play there.

In the initial concept, the crumbling set of stairs are replaced with a more compact flight of steps that connect the patio and a flat lawn area.

In refinements of the initial concept, we added a curved low wall to make it easier to grade a flat lawn.

Construction of the wall and the patio was finished in the winter, with new plants and lawn to be planted in spring.

The low stone wall is made with reclaimed stone from the old patio and steps. The style of layout and mortar harmonizes with the existing stonework on the house.
