Dam removal
In this project, I partnered with a a civil engineering firm that is removing an old 40-foot dam in southern Vermont. My role was to specify native plants to restore the stream banks. Dam removal is becoming more common throughout New England as landowners and conservancies decide it makes sense for economic, ecological or social reasons. According to the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, "Of the 1,200 known dams in Vermont, many no longer serve a useful purpose and impose legal and financial burdens on their owners."
